This Oregon Coast itinerary follows a north-to-central route from Cannon Beach toward Newport and Yachats, rather than attempting the full coastline in a few days. It works best with three or four days and fewer overnight moves. No airport or transfer mileage was supplied, so arrival travel is left separate; add that time before deciding how much you can comfortably do on Day 1.

Day 1: Cannon Beach and a North-Coast Overnight

Start in Cannon Beach with a walk toward Haystack Rock, adjusting your plans to local tides and surf. If you want to explore the tide-pool area, follow posted access guidance and avoid disturbing wildlife. Give this stop a generous part of the day rather than treating it as a quick photo opportunity. The beach and town make a manageable first outing after arrival travel.

If daylight and conditions allow, add a viewpoint or short forest walk at Ecola State Park. Check current access before driving there, and keep an alternative beach walk in mind if trails or roads are closed. Stay in the Cannon Beach, Seaside, or nearby north-coast area. For camping, reserve an established campground rather than arriving with an assumption of available space. A late arrival is a good reason to skip the second stop and settle in before dark.

Day 2: Short Sand Beach, Tillamook, and the Drive South

Leave time for a morning walk at Oswald West State Park, where forest trails lead toward Short Sand Beach. Check trail conditions and choose footwear for roots, mud, and damp surfaces. This is a useful place to stretch your legs before continuing south on U.S. Highway 101. If the weather is poor, shorten the walk rather than rushing through slippery terrain.

Continue through the Tillamook area, choosing either a town stop or a coastal detour toward Cape Meares. Do not stack every cape and beach into the same transfer day. If Newport is your overnight destination, keep the afternoon flexible and make only a few additional stops. Coastal traffic, road work, and viewpoint breaks can lengthen the journey. Book your Newport-area stay ahead, and aim to arrive with enough daylight to find your lodging or campsite without adding another major activity.

Day 3: Newport, Yaquina Head, and the Bayfront

Use Newport as a stay-put base for a full day. Begin with Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area if access and weather are suitable. Check the Bureau of Land Management's official information before visiting, and coordinate any tide-pool plans with local tide predictions. Lighthouse access may differ from access to the surrounding grounds, so do not make a tower visit the only reason for your stop.

Later, explore Newport's bayfront from public walkways and watch the working harbor without entering restricted areas. The Oregon Coast Aquarium is a useful alternative or addition, especially when rain limits beach time. Avoid trying to fit every attraction into one afternoon. A second Newport-area night keeps packing and setup to a minimum, particularly for campers. Before dinner, review the next day's forecast and official Cape Perpetua conditions so you can decide whether to continue south or stay local.

Day 4: Yachats and Cape Perpetua

Head south toward Yachats for a day centered on rocky shoreline scenery and coastal forest. Cape Perpetua offers trails and viewpoints with different levels of effort, so choose your route using the official Siuslaw National Forest information. Plan around visibility as well as rain: a lower shoreline walk may be more rewarding than an elevated view hidden by cloud, provided surf conditions allow.

Features such as Thor's Well are not places to approach casually for photographs. Observe from designated areas, stay well back from wave-washed rocks, and abandon the stop when conditions are unsuitable. After a hike, allow time in Yachats before your return journey. This itinerary ends on the central coast; it does not include the southern coast or guarantee time for an airport departure that evening. If your onward trip is substantial, shorten the day's activities or add another overnight.

Shorten the Route and Handle the Practical Details

For two days, choose one base instead of following the entire route. Pair Cannon Beach with Oswald West and nearby viewpoints, or spend both nights around Newport with a Cape Perpetua outing if conditions cooperate. For three days, either end in Newport or start there and focus on the central coast. Skipping a distant stop usually improves the trip more than leaving earlier every morning.

Reserve lodging first, then build activities around tide windows, daylight, and weather. Camping and basic park yurts generally require a different budget than private cabins; compare total estimated costs, including bedding needs, booking fees, and meals. Do not rely on a fixed driving-time promise along Highway 101. Check Oregon road conditions and the relevant official park or land-manager sites before departure. Download maps, bring rain layers, and leave enough fuel and schedule flexibility for an unexpected closure or detour.
