This three-day Everglades itinerary uses Homestead as a practical base for the main park road, then adds Shark Valley as a separate outing rather than squeezing distant entrances into one day. Miami International Airport, or MIA, is the nearest major airport; the supplied arrival estimate is about 50 miles and 96 minutes, though your actual drive depends on the entrance, traffic, and lodging location. Add a fourth day if you want to explore the Everglades City side without rushing.

Day 1: Arrive, Settle In, and Explore Royal Palm

After arriving at MIA, collect your rental car and head toward your Homestead-area base. Buy groceries, drinking water, and any missing outdoor essentials before entering the park. If your flight arrives late, keep this as a travel day and move Royal Palm to the following morning rather than racing daylight.

With enough time, stop at the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center for orientation, subject to current access and hours. Continue to Royal Palm for the Anhinga Trail and, if conditions allow, the nearby Gumbo Limbo Trail. This compact introduction pairs wetland wildlife viewing with a contrasting hammock environment. Keep the evening simple: organize supplies and check the next day's forecast and park alerts.

Day 2: Follow the Main Park Road to Flamingo

Start early for a full day along the main park road. Choose a few stops, such as Pa-hay-okee and Mahogany Hammock, instead of trying to walk every trail. Bring a picnic and enough water for the day, and allow more time than a direct driving estimate suggests for boardwalks, wildlife watching, and breaks.

At Flamingo, spend time along the Florida Bay waterfront or join a prearranged boat or paddling outing if conditions permit. Build the drive around that departure rather than booking multiple tightly spaced activities. The road does not continue through the park to Everglades City, so return toward Homestead afterward unless you have reserved an overnight stay at Flamingo.

Day 3: Explore Shark Valley

Treat Shark Valley as a separate outing reached from the Tamiami Trail corridor, not as a short detour from Flamingo. Leave your base early enough to allow for traffic, parking, and check-in if you have booked a tram tour. The guided tram is a practical way to experience the loop and observation tower without committing to a long bike ride.

Cycling is another option for visitors comfortable with the distance, heat, and exposed conditions. Confirm bicycle availability or bring suitable equipment, and do not underestimate the 15-mile loop. Afterward, return toward Miami or your lodging. If flying home that day, leave a generous airport buffer and avoid making a lengthy outdoor activity your final fixed commitment.

Day 4 Option—or How to Shorten the Trip

With a fourth day, relocate toward Everglades City for a different view of the park's coastal environment. Plan a guided boat or paddling outing in the Ten Thousand Islands area, checking current departure locations and park access before booking. Consider staying nearby rather than adding the western side to an already long day from Homestead.

For a two-day trip, choose either the Homestead–Flamingo corridor or a combination of Royal Palm and Shark Valley. You will spend less time driving if you resist collecting every entrance. A one-day visit is better focused on a single area. In wet-season weather, preserve flexibility by choosing short walks and making any water outing conditional on the forecast.

Transportation, Budget, and Reservation Tips

A rental car is the most practical way to follow this itinerary because entrances and gateway towns are widely separated. Download maps before heading out, fuel up in a gateway community, and carry food and water rather than relying on services at every stop. Distances within the park make midday returns to your hotel inconvenient.

As a rough starting estimate, allow around $165 per person per day, but expect totals to vary substantially with lodging, shared car costs, season, and guided activities. Flights are additional. Check the official Everglades National Park/NPS site for current conditions, entrance requirements, campsite reservations, and backcountry permits. Reserve lodging and priority tours ahead for winter holidays and spring break.
