This Florida Keys itinerary follows the island chain from Key Largo toward Key West, combining a reef outing with coastal parks and time on foot. Miami International Airport is a common mainland arrival point, while Key West International Airport suits trips focused on the Lower Keys. No single airport-to-destination driving time fits this route, so check live directions for your actual arrival airport, overnight town, and planned stops before booking tightly timed activities.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle Into Key Largo

If arriving through Miami, collect your vehicle and head toward Key Largo without scheduling an expensive boat departure immediately after your flight. Airport delays, rental-car pickup, and traffic can consume your buffer. Make the first afternoon about settling in, checking the next day’s marine forecast, and getting a feel for the shoreline rather than reaching several islands before dinner.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is a useful introductory stop for land-based time and information about water excursions. Alternatively, take a short walk in the hardwood hammock at Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park if conditions and access permit. Reserve your next morning’s reef trip based on the group’s experience and comfort. Overnight in Key Largo or nearby Tavernier. Before turning in, confirm check-in instructions for the boat and prepare sun protection, drinking water, and a dry place for essentials.

Day 2: Reef Time, Islamorada, and Marathon

Start with your Key Largo reef excursion if conditions allow. A morning departure can leave space for a gradual drive southwest afterward, but use the operator’s actual return time when planning the rest of the day. If wind cancels the trip, substitute a park visit or land-based attraction; do not assume a kayak outing elsewhere will automatically have suitable conditions.

Continue through Islamorada, choosing one relaxed lunch or waterfront stop rather than collecting multiple reservations. Carry on toward Marathon, where Sombrero Beach can provide a late-day change of pace if weather and daylight cooperate. Stay in Marathon to break up the drive and position yourself for the Seven Mile Bridge the following morning. If you prefer fewer hotel changes, spend your first two nights in the Upper Keys and accept a longer drive on Day 3 instead of repacking every morning.

Day 3: Seven Mile Bridge, Bahia Honda, and Key West

Leave Marathon with time for a walk on the accessible section of the Old Seven Mile Bridge, checking current access and parking arrangements beforehand. Then cross the modern Seven Mile Bridge and continue to Bahia Honda State Park. A beach break and a look at the historic railroad bridge make a satisfying pairing, but allow for heat, limited shade, and possible changes in beach conditions.

Continue through the Lower Keys toward Key West. If adding Big Pine Key, keep the detour modest and drive carefully through Key deer habitat. Do not make wildlife sightings a deadline-driven objective. Once in Key West, park at your lodging if possible and explore the compact historic area on foot. End with a waterfront stroll or sunset-viewing stop. Overnight here rather than planning a long return drive after a full day of parks, heat, and sightseeing.

Day 4: Explore Key West Before Departure

Use your final morning for Key West’s historic streets, a maritime museum, or beach time at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. Choose one main activity and leave a comfortable departure buffer. If flying from Key West International Airport, confirm your rental-car return arrangements. A one-way rental can simplify the route, but availability and drop-off charges vary and should be checked before you commit.

If returning to Miami, treat the drive as the day’s main travel task rather than stacking several timed attractions ahead of it. The Overseas Highway has limited alternatives when traffic slows, so avoid relying on a tight connection. Dry Tortugas National Park does not fit neatly into this departure morning: it is an offshore excursion requiring separate transportation and substantial time. Add another day if it is a priority, and consult the official NPS website for current access and reservations.

Shorten the Route and Budget for the Whole Trip

For two days, choose either the Upper Keys or Key West rather than trying to cover the entire chain. Key Largo and Islamorada pair naturally for a reef-focused mainland arrival, while flying into Key West reduces driving for a Lower Keys visit. With three days, follow the southbound route but simplify your stops and settle the return-transportation question before booking lodging.

Accommodation, rental cars, parking, boat trips, and meals all shape the budget. Any early cost calculation is only a rough estimate until you select dates and understand taxes, resort charges, or parking fees. Compare complete lodging totals, not just nightly rates. Keep one water activity movable when possible, and carry a short list of land alternatives. Check official Florida State Parks pages for reservations and current conditions, and recheck highway directions and weather shortly before travel rather than treating this outline as a fixed timetable.
