Coachella Valley Living Desert and Trail Regulations

Entry to regional attractions like The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens often requires timed-entry tickets booked online. While general desert hiking is open, some specific trails may have seasonal closures for bighorn sheep lambing, so checking official municipal or BLM websites is essential.

Your first two hours

Pick up your rental at Palm Springs International Airport and drive south on Gene Autry Trail to Palm Desert for resort check-in.

The right vehicle

A standard sedan is ideal for the valley floor; convertible rentals are popular but require sun protection. Check for tire pressure warnings in extreme heat.

Chase the light

The Vista Point overlook on Highway 74 provides a classic view of the valley lights at dusk; parking is limited to a small turnout.

Know before you go

Retail and Trailhead Access

Parking at El Paseo is plentiful in structures, but trailhead parking for the Bump and Grind fills by sunrise. Avoid parking in restricted residential zones near trail entrances.

Valley vs. Mountain Coverage

Cell service is excellent throughout the valley floor. Expect signal drops once ascending the Highway 74 switchbacks into the Santa Rosa mountains.

EV and Gas Availability

Charging stations and gas stations are frequent along Highway 111. Refuel before heading south on the Palms to Pines Byway, as services are non-existent until Idyllwild.

Beat the Desert Heat

Plan all outdoor physical activity for the earliest possible hour. Many local trail users begin at dawn to avoid the dangerous midday sun.

Bighorn Sheep Protection

Certain trails in the Coachella Valley close annually from January to June to protect bighorn sheep. Always check Bureau of Land Management signs at trailheads.
