Most campgrounds require reservations through Recreation.gov months in advance during the October–May peak season; first-come, first-served sites are extremely limited and typically fill by Thursday for the weekend.

Walk the one-mile trail enclosed by massive rock walls to see a variety of desert plants and monzogranite formations.

Hidden Valley parking is often at capacity by 10 AM; have a backup stop like Quail Springs ready.

Barker Dam
Observe the seasonal water tank and petroglyphs on a 1.1-mile loop; water levels depend entirely on recent rainfall.
Ryan Mountain
Climb 1,000 feet for a central view of the park's rock piles; this trail offers no shade and requires significant water.
Allow 1 hour total travel; focus on the Park Boulevard corridor
Do not attempt Ryan Mountain if temperatures exceed 90°F (32°C); there is high risk of heat exhaustion.

Cholla Cactus Garden
Walk the boardwalk through a dense stand of 'jumping' cholla; stay on the path to avoid painful spines.
Arch Rock

Bee activity can be high near moisture sources and certain flowering plants; use caution if allergic.

Stays near the end of your drive
Parking at popular spots like Skull Rock and Barker Dam is extremely limited. If a lot is full, move to the next destination rather than parking on fragile desert vegetation.
Cell service ends shortly after passing the entrance stations. Do not rely on GPS apps that require a live data connection for navigation.
No gasoline, food, or water is available within the park. Refill all supplies in Yucca Valley or Twentynine Palms before entering.
The park is an International Dark Sky Park; parking lots remain open for stargazing. Use red-filtered flashlights to preserve your night vision and that of others.
The West Entrance (Joshua Tree) can have wait times exceeding one hour on spring weekends. Consider using the North Entrance in Twentynine Palms for faster access.
