Arches: no timed entry in 2026
NPS says Arches does not require advance timed-entry reservations in 2026, although congestion can temporarily restrict vehicle access. Devils Garden Campground and Fiery Furnace hikes still require reservations or permits. Canyonlands has separate fees and activity permits; recheck both parks for your travel dates, especially for later seasons.

Arches Icons and Slickrock Hikes
Suggested: 7 AM from Moab
Delicate Arch
Hike the exposed sandstone slopes early to reach the park's most famous natural span before the midday heat.
The Windows Section
Explore North Window, South Window, and Turret Arch via a relatively short loop trail.
Allow 60–90 minutes for park roads and entry queues; conditions vary
There is no shade on the Delicate Arch trail; carry at least two liters of water per person.

Canyonlands Island in the Sky
Suggested: 8 AM from Moab
Mesa Arch
Walk the short loop to see this arch perched on the edge of a sheer cliff face.
Grand View Point Overlook
Observe the vast white rim and canyon system carved by the Colorado and Green rivers.
Allow 90–120 minutes for the round trip from Moab; conditions vary
Fuel and food are not available inside the park; supply in Moab before departure.

River Corridors and Red Rock Panoramas
Suggested: 9 AM from Moab
Utah State Route 128
Drive the scenic byway along the Colorado River to view the Fisher Towers and massive red rock cliffs.
Dead Horse Point State Park
Visit this separate state park for a high-altitude perspective of the gooseneck curves in the river.
Allow 60–90 minutes for scenic driving; conditions vary
Dead Horse Point requires a separate admission fee from National Park passes.
Your first two hours
Fly into Canyonlands Regional Airport (CNY) and drive approximately 45 minutes to Moab to secure water, groceries, and sun protection.
The right vehicle
A standard vehicle works for all main park sights; check rental contracts for prohibitions against driving on unpaved 'slickrock' or 'wash' roads.
Chase the light
Balanced Rock is a notable evening viewpoint; the sandstone glow changes rapidly as the sun dips below the horizon.

Stays near the end of your drive
Know before you go
Trailhead Congestion
Lots at Devils Garden and Delicate Arch often fill by mid-morning. If a lot is full, move to a secondary viewpoint rather than waiting on the roadway.
Desert Dead Zones
Cell service is reliable in downtown Moab but virtually non-existent inside the deep canyons and many areas of Arches. Download all maps for offline use before entering the park.
Last Supply Point
Moab is the primary hub for fuel and water. Heading north or south toward the parks requires a full tank as services are non-existent on the mesas.
Flash Flood Awareness
Afternoon thunderstorms in late summer can cause sudden flooding in washes. Check the NOAA forecast and park visitor center updates daily.
Road Restrictions
High-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are required for backcountry routes like Shafer Trail. Standard rentals are strictly limited to paved park roads.
