Desert Monument Access and Missile Range Schedules

While Las Cruces itself does not require entry permits, the nearby White Sands National Park may occasionally close the main road for up to three hours due to missile testing at the adjacent range. Check the official park calendar before your visit. Dripping Springs Natural Area and other Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks sites are managed by the BLM and may have daily vehicle use fees collected at self-pay stations.

The right vehicle

A standard sedan works for the city and White Sands, but high-clearance is necessary for the Prehistoric Trackways; check rental terms for off-pavement use.

Know before you go

Missile Range Road Blocks

U.S. Highway 70 between Las Cruces and Alamogordo is subject to periodic closures for missile testing. These closures can last several hours and affect all traffic to White Sands National Park.

Trailhead Capacity

Parking at the Aguirre Spring Campground and trailhead is limited and often fills during spring wildflower blooms. Arrive early on weekends to secure a spot for the Pine Tree Trail.

Border Proximity Connectivity

Cellular service is generally strong in Las Cruces but can switch to international roaming near the southern outskirts. Manual network selection is advised to avoid accidental roaming charges.

Chihuahuan Desert Ranges

Las Cruces is the final major service hub before heading east across the Tularosa Basin or west toward Arizona. Ensure your tank is full before exploring the remote reaches of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

Summer Monsoon Risks

July through September brings sudden afternoon thunderstorms known as monsoons. Flash floods can occur in dry arroyos, particularly near the Organ Mountains trailheads.
