This Bar Harbor itinerary gives you three core days for town, Acadia's coast, and its inland scenery, followed by two optional days for a slower visit. Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, code BHB, is about 10.3 miles from town, with an estimated 19-minute drive in light traffic. Use that as a starting point rather than a fixed transfer time, especially during busy summer and fall periods.

Day 1: Arrive and Settle into Bar Harbor

After landing at Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, collect your transportation and head toward Bar Harbor. Allow more than the estimated 19-minute drive if traffic is heavy, and arrange any needed airport transfer before arrival. Staying downtown makes an easy first evening possible without immediately tackling park roads or trailhead parking.

Drop your bags, walk through the center of town, and spend time near Agamont Park overlooking the harbor. Add a portion of the Shore Path if it is open and your arrival leaves enough daylight. Keep dinner and bedtime flexible after travel. Before turning in, review the next day's forecast, park alerts, entrance-pass needs, and any reservations through the official Acadia National Park website.

Day 2: Follow Acadia's Eastern Coast

Start early for the coastal section of Acadia, using Park Loop Road to reach the Sand Beach area. Walk a manageable stretch of Ocean Path, stopping at shoreline viewpoints without trying to cover every possible spur. Thunder Hole can be included along this corridor, but the dramatic wave action associated with it depends on conditions and is not guaranteed.

Bring lunch or plan a simple meal break so you are not constantly leaving and reentering busy areas. Keep the afternoon lighter with another short walk or a return to town. If you have a Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation, fit that drive into its assigned entry window and leave enough travel time rather than squeezing it between other commitments.

Day 3: Jordan Pond and the Carriage Roads

Make Jordan Pond the focus of your third day, arriving early or using seasonal transit where its routes fit. Enjoy the pond views, then choose a short walk or the full shoreline route based on your group's ability and current conditions. The complete route is not uniformly smooth, so check the official description before committing with young children or anyone needing level footing.

For the afternoon, choose an appropriate carriage-road walk or bicycle outing instead of adding another major drive. Study distance and hills in advance, and follow shared-use rules. If this is your final full day, return to town with time to pack and confirm departure arrangements. Swap this day with the coastal day if weather favors one landscape.

Day 4: Add a Boat Trip or Explore the Western Side

With a fourth day, choose either a water-based outing from the Bar Harbor area or a drive toward Southwest Harbor and the western side of Mount Desert Island. A boat excursion offers a different perspective on the coastline, but book with cancellation terms and weather flexibility in mind. Wildlife sightings should be treated as a possibility, not an expectation.

For a land-based alternative, explore the Southwest Harbor area and choose a walk near the quieter western park landscapes that fits your ability. Bass Harbor Head Light is a recognizable coastal stop, though parking is limited and its rocky surroundings are not an unrestricted playground. Avoid combining a long cruise and a full western-island circuit into the same rushed day.

Day 5: Enjoy a Slow Morning and Leave Room for Delays

Use an optional fifth morning for breakfast in town, a final waterfront walk, or a nearby outing you postponed because of weather. A visit to Bar Island only fits if the tide window and your departure schedule allow a comfortable return. Do not make a tide-dependent crossing the last tight connection before a flight.

For departure through BHB, allow time for traffic, rental-car return, and the airline's recommended airport arrival buffer; the estimated 19-minute drive covers only the road portion. Travelers continuing through Ellsworth toward Bangor or Portland should check their full onward route separately. Before the trip, reserve lodging early for popular dates and confirm current park access, campground availability, and Cadillac reservation requirements on the official NPS website.
