Visiting Sandpoint requires a blend of exploration and relaxation. Located about 82 miles from Spokane International Airport (GEG), the drive takes roughly an hour and forty minutes, leading you through the scenic forests of Northern Idaho. This 3-to-5-day itinerary is designed to help you experience the very best of the region, from the deep blue waters of the lake to the soaring heights of the Selkirk Mountains, all while enjoying the charm of one of America's best small towns.

Day 1: Arrival and Lakeside Introduction

After landing at Spokane International Airport and picking up your rental car, begin the scenic 82-mile drive north. You will pass through Coeur d'Alene before the landscape opens up into the rolling hills and dense timber of the Panhandle. Upon arriving in Sandpoint, head straight to City Beach to stretch your legs. This iconic park offers a wonderful introduction to Lake Pend Oreille with its sandy shores and views of the surrounding mountains.

Spend your afternoon wandering through the historic downtown area, specifically the Cedar Street Bridge Public Market, where you can find locally made crafts and snacks. For dinner, choose one of the restaurants along First Avenue that offers outdoor seating to soak in the mountain air. As the sun sets, walk across the pedestrian section of the Long Bridge. The reflection of the twilight sky on the water is the perfect way to conclude your first day. Before retiring for the night, stop by a local grocery store to stock up on trail snacks and water for the adventures ahead.

Day 2: Mountain Heights at Schweitzer

Dedicated your second day to the peaks. Even if it is not ski season, Schweitzer Mountain Resort is a must-visit. The drive up the mountain road takes about 20-30 minutes from downtown Sandpoint and offers several pull-outs for photos. In the summer, take the chairlift to the summit for breathtaking 360-degree views. You can spend the morning hiking the high-alpine trails or trying your hand at the mountain bike park.

If you are visiting in the winter, this is your full day on the slopes. Schweitzer’s diverse terrain ensures there is something for everyone, from beginners to expert powder seekers. Have lunch at the mountain village to experience the alpine atmosphere. In the afternoon, head back down to town and relax your muscles with a visit to a local spa or a quiet walk through the Kaniksu National Forest trails near the base of the mountain. Evening is a great time to explore the local brewery scene, where you can sample craft beers named after local landmarks and chat with residents about their favorite hidden spots.

Day 3: Water Adventures and Hidden Coves

On your third day, it is time to get out on Lake Pend Oreille. Rent a boat, kayak, or paddleboard from one of the marinas in town. If you have a motorboat, head south toward the Green Monarch Ridges, where the mountains plunge directly into the deep water, creating a dramatic and beautiful backdrop. Find a quiet cove to drop anchor and enjoy a picnic lunch on the water.

For those who prefer to stay closer to shore, paddling around the mouth of Sand Creek offers a peaceful perspective of the town’s architecture. Keep an eye out for ospreys diving for fish and turtles sunning themselves on logs. After a full day on the water, spend your evening at one of the lakeside parks. If your trip is only three days, this is a great time to enjoy a final celebratory dinner downtown. If you are staying longer, use this evening to plan a more ambitious hike or a drive further north toward the Canadian border.

Day 4: Hiking the Selkirk Trails

For those on a longer trip, Day 4 is the perfect time to tackle one of the region's premier hiking trails. The Mickinnick Trail is highly recommended for its well-maintained path and spectacular rewards. The trailhead is just a short drive from the center of town. The hike is roughly 7 miles round-trip and involves a significant elevation gain, so start early to beat the heat and the crowds. The views from the top provide a bird’s-eye perspective of the entire lake basin.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something less strenuous, the Mineral Point Trail offers a beautiful walk through the woods with several access points to small, rocky beaches where you can skip stones and enjoy the silence. In the afternoon, consider a drive out to the Clark Fork Delta. This area is a maze of islands and channels where the Clark Fork River enters the lake, providing some of the best birdwatching in the state. Bring your binoculars, as you are likely to see eagles, herons, and various migratory species.

Day 5: Small Town Culture and Departure

On your final day, take it slow and soak in the culture of Sandpoint. Start your morning with a visit to a local coffee shop and browse the independent bookstores downtown. If it’s a Saturday, don't miss the Farmers Market at Farmin Park, where you can buy fresh regional produce, huckleberry jam, and handmade jewelry. It is the perfect place to pick up souvenirs that truly represent the North Idaho spirit.

Before heading back to Spokane International Airport, take one last drive along the Pend Oreille Scenic Byway toward Hope, Idaho. This small community built into the hillsides offers a different view of the lake and some lovely historic architecture. The drive back to the airport takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, so plan to leave with plenty of time to return your rental car. As you head south, you'll already be planning your return trip to the Panhandle. Always check the official NPS or state tourism sites before your flight to ensure you haven't missed any last-minute events or seasonal closures.
