No-reservation guide
Isle Royale National Park without a reservation
What needs booking
Advance Ferry and Wilderness Permit Reservations
Isle Royale requires two separate reservations: one for transportation (ferry or seaplane) and one for park entry/camping. Overnight camping permits for groups under seven are obtained on the island, but the Rock Harbor Lodge and ferry seats must be booked many months in advance due to strict capacity. All visitors must check the official NPS schedule for seasonal closure dates.

Strict Seasonal Closure
The park is entirely closed from November through mid-April to all visitors. Always verify ferry startup dates as ice can linger in Lake Superior until late May.
timing
Ferry Departure Window
Ferries depart promptly; missing a boat can mean a multi-day wait for the next available seat. Arrive at the wharf at least one hour before scheduled departure.
parking
Mainland Long-term Lots
Long-term parking is provided at ferry terminals in Houghton and Copper Harbor. These lots are secure but can fill during peak summer weeks.
