North Cascades Access and Sno-Park Permitting

Permit requirements vary significantly between winter cross-country skiing and summer hiking on US Forest Service lands. Backcountry camping in the nearby North Cascades National Park requires a specific permit system that often utilizes a lottery or advance booking. Check the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and Washington State Parks websites for current Sno-Park pass mandates.

Know before you go

Trailhead Congestion

Popular spots like Blue Lake or Maple Pass fill early on summer weekends. Have a backup plan at less crowded USFS trailheads if the main lots are full.

Mountain Dead Zones

Cellular coverage drops off rapidly once leaving the Winthrop town center and Heading west toward the mountains. Download offline maps and inform others of your destination before departing.

Methow Valley Services

Winthrop and Twisp provide the last reliable fuel and grocery services before the long stretch across the North Cascades Highway. In winter, ensure your vehicle is topped off for unexpected delays.

Seasonal Road Closures

The North Cascades Highway (Hwy 20) is subject to total winter closure. During this time, access to Winthrop is only possible from the south via Wenatchee or Pateros.

Wilderness Permits

Day hikers generally only need a Northwest Forest Pass at trailheads. Multi-day trips into the Pasayten Wilderness require self-issued registration at the trailhead.
