Your first two hours

Arrive via Reno-Tahoe International for the most direct route, or Sacramento for a longer climb. Grocery shops in Truckee serve as the primary supply point for the northern Tahoe region.

The right vehicle

A 4WD or AWD vehicle is strongly recommended during winter months; check rental agency policies regarding tire chains and mountain driving.

Chase the light

The Rainbow Bridge at Donner Summit provides a westward view that captures the setting sun over the Sierra Crest, depending on cloud cover.

Downtown Management

Paid parking is enforced in the historic downtown Truckee district. Free public lots are available at the regional park, but require a longer walk to reach the historic commercial center.

Corridor Coverage

Cell service is strong along the I-80 corridor and in town. Coverage becomes unreliable once entering the deeper canyons or heading north toward the Jackson Meadows area.

Regional Supply

Truckee is a major regional hub for fuel and groceries before heading to more remote parts of the Tahoe National Forest. Prices are typically higher than in Reno or Sacramento.

Winter Requirements

Snowfall can occur from October through May; check Caltrans QuickMap for chain control status on Donner Pass. Summer visitors should aim for early starts to avoid the midday heat on exposed granite trails.

Public Land Boundaries

Much of the land surrounding Truckee is a mix of Tahoe National Forest and private parcels. Stay on designated trails at Martis Creek and Donner Summit to avoid trespassing.
