Incline Operations and State Park Access

While most urban parks in Pittsburgh do not require entry permits, glamping sites in the nearby Laurel Highlands and state park cabins often require reservations six to eleven months in advance. The historic inclines operate on a transit schedule; however, maintenance closures can occur. Always verify current operating status for the Duquesne Incline via its official preservation society site.

The right vehicle

Standard vehicles are suitable for the city, but all-wheel drive is recommended if visiting the Laurel Highlands in late autumn; check rental tires for hilly terrain.

Know before you go

Mount Washington Overlooks

Metered street parking on Grandview Avenue is extremely competitive during sunset. Use the parking lots at the base of the inclines in Station Square for more reliable access.

River Valley Reception

Signal strength is excellent in the city center, but can drop in the steep river valleys or when traveling through the Liberty Tunnels. Offline maps are recommended for navigating the winding streets of the South Side Slopes.

Bridge and Tunnel Logistics

Fuel stations are common in the gateway suburbs like Cranberry and Greensburg. Within the city, gas stations are clustered primarily along the Route 51 and Route 88 corridors south of the rivers.

Morning Mist on the Rivers

Early morning is the best time for photography at Point State Park to capture the river mist before the sun burns it off. Midweek visits to Phipps Conservatory avoid the heavy weekend wedding crowds.

Incline Maintenance

The Monongahela and Duquesne inclines occasionally close for technical inspections. Check the Pittsburgh Regional Transit website for service alerts before planning your ascent of Mount Washington.
