Livingston to Yellowstone Corridor Access Guidelines

Access to Paradise Valley is generally unrestricted, but the southern terminus at Yellowstone National Park often requires separate entry passes. During peak summer, lodge and campsite reservations within the valley and nearby Gardiner frequently book out months in advance; verify seasonal road status for North Entrance access.

Stop at this historic site for a soak in the mineral pools nestled against the mountainside.

Photograph the iconic stone entrance in Gardiner, marking the original gateway to the first National Park.

    • Pine Creek Falls

Hike the forested trail to a cascading waterfall at the base of the Gallatin National Forest.

Allow 60 minutes for the roundtrip to Tom Miner; roads are primarily gravel and can be washboarded.

Bear spray is essential for all hikes in this region; ensure you know how to use it.

Your first two hours

Fly into Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, rent a vehicle, and drive east through the Chestnut Mountain pass to enter Paradise Valley at Livingston.

The right vehicle

An SUV is recommended for navigating gravel forest roads and handling high-wind gusts common in the valley. Check for windshield chip coverage in your rental.

Chase the light

The 'Point of Rocks' area along Highway 89 offers an unobstructed view of the Absaroka peaks as they catch the evening light.

Know before you go

River and Park Access

Fishing access sites along the Yellowstone River have small lots that fill with boat trailers by mid-morning. In Gardiner, use the public lot near the Arch if street parking is full.

Rural Montana Coverage

Digital signals are stable in Livingston and Gardiner but non-existent in the Tom Miner Basin and deep within the Gallatin National Forest. Download offline maps for navigation.

Gateway Service Stations

Livingston and Gardiner are the primary hubs for fuel and supplies. Services are sparse between these two points, especially after dark.

Wildlife and Weather

Wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk, which are also the times when driving is most hazardous. Check the Montana DOT website for wind warnings through the canyon.

National Forest Entrances

Forest service roads to trailheads like Pine Creek may be impassable due to snow until late May or early June. Always check current USFS trail reports.
