Ojai Valley Access and Wilderness Trail Use

Ojai does not require an entry permit for the town itself, but popular trailheads in the Los Padres National Forest may require a Northwest Forest Pass or Adventure Pass for parking. Accommodations in the valley are limited and frequently reach capacity on weekends. If planning to visit the nearby hot springs or specific private botanical gardens, reservations must be confirmed directly with those operators well in advance.

3 days in Ojai

  1. 01

    Valley Floor and Botanical Wonders

Suggested: 9 AM from Ojai Avenue

    • Libbey Park

The central hub of the town, featuring heritage oaks and the site of the valley's long-running music festivals.

    • Ojai Meadows Preserve

Walk the restored wetlands to see local birdlife and the seasonal wildflowers that define the valley's ecosystem.

Primarily walking or local cycling; allow 15 minutes for town transfers.

Morning fog can linger in the valley until mid-day during the spring.

  2. 02

High Ridge Views and Forest Trails

Suggested: 8 AM from Shelf Road

    • Shelf Road Trail

Follow the old cliffside road for an elevated perspective of the citrus groves and the entire Ojai Valley floor.

    • Rose Valley Falls

A short drive into the Los Padres National Forest leads to a two-tiered waterfall set against sandstone cliffs.

Allow 1 hour for the drive into the Los Padres forest via Highway 33; road conditions can vary after rain.

Highway 33 is subject to closures during heavy winter storms due to rockslides.

  3. 03

East End Groves and Artistic Heritage

Suggested: 9:30 AM from the East End

    • Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts

Located in the Upper Ojai Valley, this site offers insight into the region's deep connection to the mid-century art movement.

    • Meditation Mount

Visit this public center for its landscaped gardens and panoramic views of the Topatopa Mountains.

Allow 45 minutes for the loop through the East End; watch for cyclists on narrow roads.

Meditation Mount has specific public visiting hours that must be checked in advance.

Your first two hours

Fly into Santa Barbara (SBA) and take the scenic 150 highway into the valley. Pick up supplies at the local markets before the stores close in the early evening.

The right vehicle

Standard cars are ideal; Highway 33 is a popular motorcycle route but can be challenging for long RVs due to tight switchbacks.

Chase the light

Sunset from Meditation Mount or Shelf Road to witness the 'Pink Moment' on the Topatopa Mountains; the effect is most vivid in winter.

Trailhead Permits

Many parking areas in the Los Padres National Forest require a pre-purchased Adventure Pass. These are rarely sold at the trailheads themselves; buy one in town first.

Highway 33 Prep

Gas stations are concentrated in the town of Ojai. There is no fuel available if you continue north on Highway 33 toward the Cuyama Valley.

Downtown Congestion

Weekend parking near Libbey Park fills quickly. Use the public lots behind the arcade shops for more reliable space.

Backcountry Tech

Expect signal loss once you begin the climb into the mountains on Highway 33. Offline maps are essential for locating forest trailheads.

The Pink Moment

This local phenomenon occurs when the sunset reflects off the Topatopa bluffs. Position yourself on the east end of the valley 30 minutes before sunset.
