Managing Historic Home Tours and Natchez Trace Entry

While Natchez is a public town, many historic sites are privately owned and require separate admission tickets. During the Spring and Fall Pilgrimage seasons, home tour schedules change daily and should be verified with the official visitor center. Entry to the Natchez Trace Parkway is free, but overnight stays at local historic inns should be secured well in advance due to limited heritage room inventory.

Your first two hours

Pick up your rental at Baton Rouge (BTR) and drive north through the river parishes. Check into your guesthouse before a sunset walk on the bluffs.

The right vehicle

Standard sedans are perfect for the paved Parkway and town streets; RVs should verify height clearances on smaller residential side streets.

Chase the light

Sunset from Natchez Bluffs Park overlooking the Mississippi River; the light hits the Louisiana side of the riverbank beautifully.

Private Sites

Many historic mansions are private residences and only open during the official Spring and Fall Pilgrimage weeks. Always check the seasonal calendar for public access.

Parkway Limitations

There are no gas stations directly on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Refuel in Natchez before starting your drive toward Emerald Mound.

Downtown Hubs

Street parking is available throughout the historic district, but heavy vehicle parking is better suited for the lot at the Natchez Visitor Center.

Trace Dead Zones

Cellular reception can be intermittent once you leave the city limits and head north on the Parkway. Plan navigation before departing the downtown area.

Pilgrimage Fluctuations

The city experience changes drastically during March and October. If you prefer a quiet visit, avoid these peak festival months.
