San Jacinto Wilderness Permits and Seasonal Fire Rules

Wilderness permits are required for all hikers entering the Mount San Jacinto State Park and Wilderness areas, even for day trips. These are separate from the National Forest Adventure Pass needed for parking at specific trailheads. Accommodation in this small mountain village is primarily private cabins or small inns; advanced booking is essential during summer weekends and snowy winter holidays.

Know before you go

Wilderness Permit Quotas

State Park wilderness permits are issued at the ranger station in the village; quotas may apply for popular routes. Ensure you carry the physical permit while on the trails as rangers frequently check for compliance.

Adventure Pass Requirements

Parking at National Forest trailheads like Humber Park requires a displayed Adventure Pass. These can be purchased at local shops in the village center before you head to the trailhead.

Mountain Topography Interference

Cell service is often available in the village but drops off quickly as you ascend the Devils Slide or Deer Springs trails. Satellite communication devices are recommended for longer wilderness treks.

Last Reliable Fuel

There are limited fuel stations in Idyllwild; ensure you have enough for the steep climb and descent. The nearest major service centers are in Hemet or Palm Springs at the base of the mountains.

Winter Road Closures

Highway 243 can experience sudden closures or R3 chain requirements during winter storms. Check Caltrans District 8 updates before attempting to drive up from the Banning side.
