Ten Thousand Islands Waterway and Gulf Access

Wilderness permits are required for all overnight backcountry camping in the nearby national park waters, managed via a central reservation system. Day-use boat tours and rentals are separate commercial entities and should be booked well in advance during the dry season. Verify the specific launch site as some locations are tide-dependent and require official check-in.

3 days in Everglades City

  1. 01

    Mangrove Tunnels and Coastal Keys

Suggested: 8:30 AM from the Gulf Coast Visitor Center

    • Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge

Navigate the labyrinth of mangroves to spot manatees and migratory birds in their natural estuary.

    • Smallwood Store

Step into a preserved 1906 trading post that served as the primary link for early settlers on Chokoloskee Island.

Local travel by boat; allow 3–5 hours depending on tide cycles

Tidal movements are significant; local charts must be consulted for all water-based transit.

  2. 02

Big Cypress Vistas and Swamp Boardwalks

Suggested: 9 AM from Everglades City

    • Big Cypress National Preserve

Drive the Loop Road for sightings of alligators and cypress knees in the freshwater marl prairies.

    • Clyde Butcher’s Big Cypress Gallery

View large-format wilderness photography and walk the surrounding nature path through the swamp.

Allow 2 hours for the slow-speed scenic loop; conditions vary with water levels

Portions of the scenic loop are unpaved; check vehicle clearance and weather impacts.

  3. 03

    Historic Town and River Exploration

Suggested: 9:30 AM from Barron River

    • Everglades City Hall

Admire the historic Neoclassical architecture of the former Collier County Courthouse.

    • Turner River

Launch a kayak to experience the transition from sawgrass prairies to dense mangrove canopies.

Minimal driving; primary transit is via paddle or small vessel

Biting insects are prevalent year-round; plan for higher activity in shaded mangrove areas.

Your first two hours

Land at RSW, drive 90 minutes south via I-75 and SR-29, and secure watercraft rentals before afternoon breezes pick up.

The right vehicle

High-clearance vehicles are recommended for unpaved preserve roads; standard cars are fine for the town and main highways.

Chase the light

Chokoloskee Island bridge provides a panoramic westward view over the Ten Thousand Islands for sunset photography.

Know before you go

Public Boat Ramp Access

The Everglades City public ramp fills early during fishing tournaments. Limited street parking is available for oversized trailers near the circle.

Waterway Dead Zones

Cellular coverage is non-existent once deep in the mangrove islands. Carry a physical nautical chart and a VHF radio for emergency communication.

Marine and Road Supply

On-water fuel is available at select marinas in Everglades City and Chokoloskee. Ensure land vehicles are fueled in Naples before entering the rural glades corridors.

Tide Window Constraints

Many mangrove tunnels become impassable at low tide, while high tide can limit clearance under bridges. Consult NOAA tide tables for the Barron River station.

Backcountry Permits

Access to remote chickees and keys for overnight stays requires a physical permit printout. Check the Recreation.gov window for seasonal availability.
