During peak season, driving to the summit of Cadillac Mountain requires a vehicle reservation purchased in advance. This is separate from the standard park entrance pass required for all visitors. Sand Beach and Ocean Path
Walk the shoreline path to see the dramatic intersection of pink granite and the Atlantic Ocean.
Thunder Hole
Observe the natural rock inlet where waves create a thunderous sound during rising tides.
Allow 1–2 hours if using the one-way Loop Road; parking is highly competitive.
Coastal fog can develop rapidly; carry a light waterproof layer even if it is sunny in town.

Cadillac Mountain Summit
Drive the summit road for a panoramic view of the Porcupine Islands and Frenchman Bay.
Jordan Pond
Walk the level shoreline trail for views of the North and South Bubbles across the water.
Allow 2–3 hours; check for summit vehicle reservation times and avoid peak pond traffic.
Jordan Pond is a public water source; do not enter the water or allow pets to swim.

Bass Harbor Head Light
View the historic lighthouse from the designated cliffside path on the 'Quiet Side' of the island.
Echo Lake Beach
Enjoy the freshwater shoreline tucked under the cliffs of Beech Mountain.
Allow 3 hours for the round trip from Bar Harbor; roads are narrower on the western side.
Parking at the lighthouse is extremely limited; have a backup plan if the lot is full.
Arrive at BHB airport and drive 20 minutes to Bar Harbor. Use your first two hours to secure park passes at the visitor center and pick up essentials in the village.
Compact cars are ideal for narrow island roads; verify that rental agreements allow travel on unpaved village roads.
Cadillac Mountain is a premier location for sunrise, though cloud cover and fog are common seasonal factors.

Stays near the end of your drive
Sand Beach and Jordan Pond parking can be busy in peak season. When Island Explorer is operating, check its current routes and schedule before relying on the shuttle.
Cellular reception is generally reliable in Bar Harbor but drops significantly on the southern coast and western trails. Carry a physical map for navigation when exploring the interior carriage roads.
Plan to fuel up in nearby communities such as Bar Harbor or Southwest Harbor before exploring Acadia. Confirm station locations and opening hours locally.
Shared-use carriage roads are for pedestrians, cyclists, and horses only; motor vehicles are prohibited. Allow more time than expected for hills and navigation at intersections.
Most of Park Loop Road, including Cadillac Mountain Road, closes to vehicles December 1 through April 14; limited sections remain open. Check current alerts and spring opening conditions.
