This two- to four-day itinerary focuses on southern Cherokee National Forest, linking Tellico Plains, the Cherohala Skyway, and the Ocoee area without trying to include the distant northern districts. No airport or driving-distance details were supplied, so travel times are not assumed here. If flying, compare Knoxville and Chattanooga airport options against your chosen first-night base, then check current routing before booking flights and lodging.

1

Day 1: Arrive in Tellico Plains and Settle In

Use Tellico Plains as your starting point for a Tellico-focused trip. Buy groceries, fill the fuel tank, and download maps before heading toward your campground or lodging. If your arrival is late, keep the afternoon simple rather than adding a mountain drive that leaves you setting up after dark.

With enough daylight, explore the Tellico River corridor using currently open roads and designated recreation stops. A short streamside walk or picnic introduces the forest without demanding a full hiking day. Bald River Falls is a well-known nearby landmark, but confirm road and viewpoint access before including it; construction and storm damage can alter the approach.

At camp, review food-storage rules and the next day's forecast. Keep dinner straightforward, organize rain gear, and choose tomorrow's main hike only after checking its access and elevation. Mountain weather may differ substantially from conditions in town.

Day 2: Spend the Day on the Cherohala Skyway

Make the Cherohala Skyway your main outing rather than squeezing it between unrelated stops. Starting from Tellico Plains, climb toward the high overlooks and stop only in designated parking areas. You do not need to drive the entire route to enjoy it; choose a turnaround point that leaves time for a picnic and an unhurried walk.

Pick one established trail with a distance and elevation gain suited to your group. High ridges can be windy or foggy even when the valley is clear, so carry layers and avoid exposed terrain if thunderstorms threaten. Bring lunch and drinking water instead of depending on services along the mountain route.

Return to your Tellico base for a second night if this is a two-day getaway. Before leaving the forest, allow time to break camp properly, pack out trash, and account for the drive to your onward destination.

Day 3: Shift Toward Parksville Lake and the Ocoee

For a third day, move your focus toward the Ocoee corridor. If rafting is your priority, choose lodging or camping convenient to your outfitter's meeting location and confirm the schedule before leaving Tellico Plains. Ocoee whitewater depends on dam releases, and trip suitability, equipment requirements, and participant restrictions should be checked directly with the operator.

Prefer a quieter day? Plan a picnic and shoreline outing at a designated recreation area around Parksville Lake. Paddlers should check launch access, wind, and expected boat traffic before choosing a route. The lake and the whitewater river offer very different experiences, so do not treat them as interchangeable water stops.

Keep the transfer day manageable by choosing either rafting or a lake outing, not both by default. Use official Forest Service information to confirm day-use access, campground conditions, and any road closures along your route.

Day 4: Explore Chilhowee Before Heading Home

Use an optional fourth day for Chilhowee Recreation Area and its surrounding mountain scenery. Check the access road and recreation-area status before starting uphill, then choose between a short lakeside outing and a longer maintained trail. This is a useful final day for travelers who want more hiking without relocating to another forest district.

If Benton Falls is on your list, consult the current trail description and allow time for the return walk and the steeper approach near the falls. Stay on established routes, avoid climbing wet rocks, and adjust plans if rainfall has made footing or stream conditions unfavorable. A waterfall should not become a deadline-driven stop.

Leave a comfortable margin for departure, especially if returning a rental car or catching a flight. Pack up before the outing where practical, and avoid depending on mountain cell service for last-minute navigation or reservation details.

Trip Logistics, Budgeting, and a Northern Alternative

For this southern route, one Tellico base works for a short stay; adding an Ocoee-area night can reduce backtracking on a longer trip. Compare Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport and Chattanooga Airport using live directions to your actual lodging. Neither airport comes with a single reliable forest-wide drive time because Cherokee has many access points.

Budget for lodging or campground fees, fuel, groceries, and any rafting or equipment rentals. Camping is generally the lower-cost approach, while furnished lodging and guided activities increase the total; treat all advance estimates as rough and check inclusions before booking.

If Watauga Lake, Erwin, or the Roan Highlands interests you more, build a separate northern itinerary instead of adding them here. Before departure, consult the official Cherokee National Forest website for conditions, fire restrictions, campground reservation links, and rules for your chosen activities.
